Following boot training, Marines land on Guadalcanal in August 1942 and prepare for combat. The primary story, "The Monjo River Battle," details how Sergeant Jim Woley and his demolition team are tasked with destroying supplies and equipment at a supply depot to prevent them from falling into enemy hands during a Chinese Communist advance across the Yata River, while also dealing with wounded personnel and strategic decisions about their retreat. The issue also features "Captain Candy's Raid," in which Captain Candy leads an armed assault outfit on a dangerous nighttime operation to attack a tank and troop concentration, with his heavily-armed crew expected to accomplish what an entire division cannot.
