The main story, "Marked for Dying," depicts a naval engagement where the U.S.S. Needham receives orders from Tojo himself to be destroyed. The U.S.S. Needham is damaged in combat but survives the initial onslaught and takes refuge in a lagoon. The crew, led by Captain Stang and his skipper, must navigate the shallow, jungle-choked river mouth to escape while Japanese aircraft and carrier forces attack, ultimately engaging in combat against the Japanese fleet with gunfire and air support.
