A woman recalls her passionate romance with a man named Virlo, whom she met through scheming to separate him from another woman. The story follows her later involvement with Bruce Lake, a wealthy man from an institution, and subsequent complications including her uncle Ben's involvement in phony stock schemes and a mysterious stranger who arrives at their home, revealed to be Allan Shaw, whom Uncle Ben describes as his best friend and the finest girl in the state.
