The narrative follows a catastrophic forest fire that ravaged the area, destroying trees and grass across the hills, while explaining how watersheds are damaged when forests burn and explaining that the fire near Peshtigo was so intense it seemed to "explode into flame" with the wind creating a roaring furnace that threatened the town's 2,000 inhabitants.
