The Monster encounters a massive whale that batters a centuries-old ship, causing the creature to be dumped from the vessel's try-pot into the ocean; revived by cold water, he struggles for survival as the ship sinks. Weeks later, Mortimer observes Sylvia dancing with a former flame named Allen at the Phoenix Club; when Allen announces his engagement to Sylvia, Mortimer becomes enraged and confronts her at her house, but Sylvia rejects his advances. That night, Mortimer visits Sylvia's home with a gun, only to encounter a vagrant named Joe Carney whom he mistakes for a rival; after a scuffle, Mortimer realizes his error and the two men bond over their shared misfortunes and wishes for money and better fortune.
