A woman named Kathy avoids her husband Paul because she felt she couldn't accept his love given her origins as a maid in his family's mills in Blakeville, but Paul reassures her of his devotion and buys out her shares so she can be free of the mills and start her own life. In a separate story titled "The Biggest," Ellen Whitely joins her father on vacation at Highmont Lodge where she meets Bob Raleigh, a fisherman, and they bond over fishing and conversation despite her husband Hugh's absence from the social scene.
