This issue contains at least two stories featuring frontier conflict. "Chief Victorio and the Navajo God of Blood" depicts the Navajo leader Victorio and his warriors possessing a powerful idol called Tah-Lo, which they use to terrorize settlers and inspire superstitious fear throughout the tribe, until Kit Carson rises to meet the threat. "Chief Black Hawk and His Dogs of War" chronicles the Sauk leader Black Hawk's raids on settlers in spring 1832, with Kit Carson pursuing the war party after they attack a wagon train, kill settlers, and escape on horseback, leaving Carson to track them through rocky terrain.
