A woman named Ellen falls in love with Clark, a man she meets who seems wealthy and successful, but discovers he is actually a penniless construction worker. After initially leaving him, Ellen realizes her true feelings and returns, but Clark abandons her to pursue his ambitions without her. Years later, Ellen encounters Clark again when he arrives at the hospital where she now works as a nurse, gravely injured and in need of surgery. As Jerry, her current husband, undergoes the operation, Ellen must confront the return of her first love while caring for him during his recovery.
