"The Lady Misbehaves" follows Dottie, a sheltered young woman raised by her conservative mother, who takes a job at the Layton Company and discovers she is very different from her coworkers. When her coworkers Cora and Lila teach her to flirt and attract men's attention, Dottie becomes interested in Nicky Palma, a wealthy and successful man. After a chance encounter at a society event where Nicky performs as a singer, Dottie pursues him, but her straightforward approach fails to win his affection. The story includes a subplot involving a fur coat mix-up at a department store, where Dottie's friend Bella and a new store manager named Bette inadvertently become entangled in a scheme involving a customer's mink coat, ultimately leading to complications in Dottie's romantic plans.
