Rocky Lane investigates a covered wagon raid on the Chandler Ranch, where outlaws have been killing and robbing for years. He discovers that old man Chandler was secretly selling off parcels of the ranch to lure the outlaws into a trap, intending to drive them out once he had gathered enough of "the right kind of people" as buyers. After Chandler's death, a mysterious figure continues his plan, and Rocky must uncover the identity of this shadow operative while confronting dangerous criminals at an abandoned relay station and canyon pass. The story culminates in a gunfight where Rocky defeats the villain and resolves the conflict surrounding the ranch's ownership.
