Peter Wheat and Beetle embark on a desert adventure, discovering a mirage before being pursued by giant red ants. Beetle attempts to escape on horseback while Peter suggests they divide their forces to evade the ants, arranging to meet at a river crossing. Peter exhausts the mouse carrying him and continues on foot, eventually surrendering to the pursuing ants in the desert kingdom, where the inhabitants interrogate him about his purpose in their land.
