However, their happiness is threatened when Mrs. Russell appears and warns the man to leave the woman alone, revealing that he cannot marry her because he is already engaged to someone else and must keep his mother from finding out about his deception. The woman, devastated by this betrayal, breaks off the relationship and leaves, unable to forgive his dishonesty.
