Public Defender Richard Manning defends Barry Kerigan, a man accused of stealing jewelry, weapons, and cash from Norman Eldridge, head of the Civic Reform League. Manning must prove Kerigan innocent within a week while dealing with pressure from crime boss Cesar Vejos, who wants Manning to ensure Kerigan's conviction. Evidence emerges showing the stolen items were legally owned by Kerigan, and the case is dismissed. Manning later encounters Kerigan's associate Al Kronin, a fugitive who threatens Manning and attempts to escape; Kronin crashes his car and dies, and Manning reflects that this was one of the few cases he lost in his career.
