This issue features the story "Buffalo Bill and the Goldmine Massacre," depicting a fall 1867 attack on a gold camp in the Black Hills where prospectors are slaughtered by Native Americans; a newspaper editor subsequently calls for military action to drive indigenous peoples from the territory. The issue also includes two legendary tales: "The Rescue of Howling Wind," about a young Saranac brave who rescues his imprisoned lover from execution with aid from her tribe, and "The Indian Plume," explaining how a maiden's sacrifice transforms into a sacred flower. A third story, "Grey Wolf," depicts a Kiowa medicine man's vendetta against a wolf that defeats him in competition during tribal games.
