An ambitious young woman from Maine named Ellen accepts an opportunity to work as a model in New York City, leaving behind her devoted boyfriend Doug. As Ellen becomes absorbed in the glamorous modeling world and high society, she grows distant and dismissive of Doug, eventually breaking their engagement because she finds him unsophisticated. When Doug confronts Ellen about her changed personality, she cruelly rejects him, but he ultimately recognizes that the life she's chosen has made her superficial and vain, leaving them both unhappy.
