"My Substitute Love" follows a woman who reflects on her thousand previous lives with her husband, which lacked spark, until she meets a mysterious stranger and begins seeing him secretly. When her husband's older brother Carl discovers the affair and confronts her, she leaves with the stranger; Carl then brings the car to a stop in the park, where he reveals to the woman that the stranger is actually Bill, their brother, sent to test her faithfulness—and she has failed the test. The story concludes with Carl declaring Bill a fool for giving up such a lovely girl, implying the woman's infidelity has cost her dearly.
