Smiley, excited about a big scoop, agrees to help the sheriff capture the notorious outlaw "Dirty Dabble." After locking up criminals in the jailhouse, Smiley uses proof paper to reveal a wanted poster and learn the outlaw's identity. When confronted, a shootout ensues, and Smiley discovers the outlaw has broken a mirror, leading him to a newspaper editor named Ring Eye who reluctantly agrees to print Smiley's story about silver discovered in an awful chance mine, which becomes the centerpiece of the tale.
