"Sparkling Stars" #23 is an anthology containing at least two stories. "Unusual Sports Stars" features an account of Herbert Hoover's early athletic ambitions at Stanford University, where he challenged the University of California's football team and later became coach and manager. The other visible story follows government explorers who discover a hidden underground river and encounter dinosaurs in a remote cave system; they are rescued by armed men posing as friends, who turn out to be modern adventurers. A third story depicts the historical dangers of whaling, narrating how Captain Ahab lost his leg to a whale and explaining the evolution from man-powered harpoons to modern floating factory-ships that process whale carcasses.
