Steve Roper is summoned by his boss to take on a new case when a beautiful woman appears at the magazine office with a matchbook that causes her to act strangely. The woman, Minnie, reveals that criminals have kidnapped Steve and are holding him in a basement, forcing her to retrieve a valuable diamond called the Shah from Mrs. Preen. Steve's colleagues launch a search to find and rescue him before it's too late. The case culminates when the gang attempts to use a cleverly forged imitation diamond to replace the real Shah, but their scheme is discovered.
