Steve Roper must locate the missing magician Mr. "E" after he suddenly falls ill during a performance, a disappearance that leads him on a dangerous investigation involving carbon monoxide poisoning in a hidden car. The case takes Roper to a remote location where he discovers a criminal scheme involving the delivery of a valuable jacket containing jewels to a character named Minnie in an apartment building. After uncovering the thieves' plot to rob the jewels during a nighttime exchange, Roper works to apprehend them before they can escape with their haul.
