Corporal Boldini then offers the men an escape plan, proposing they become either "pigs or butchers," which leads to a mutiny plot scheduled to occur within twenty-four hours. The story concludes with Digby setting fire to the fort as a warrior's funeral for the fallen Beau Geste, cremating him with his dog at his feet.
