Derek, a lonely young man seeking companionship, pursues a girl from his own age and background but is rejected as "too high class" for her crowd. Years later, now a hardened sailor, he encounters the same woman and reveals the painful truth: she had once been engaged to another man named Joe, whom Derek had known. Derek had sabotaged that relationship out of jealousy, telling Joe false stories about the woman's past, resulting in Joe being imprisoned on a suspended sentence. When Derek tries to reconnect with the woman, Joe intervenes, but ultimately Joe's parents offer Derek a fresh start by inviting him to live with their family and learn their business, giving the remorseful man a chance at redemption and a new life.
