Dixon investigates a blackmail case involving Betty and Harry Baker. Betty has gone to the other side of London instead of attending her housewife's club, and Harry waits for her at a dingy café where he arranged to meet her. Andy, one of the blackmail planners, is brought into the case to help Dixon work out the details, as evidence is difficult to obtain when the blackmailer hasn't left anything in writing. Dixon notes that they must catch any snags and remain vigilant, anticipating that one day there will be a chief commissioner in the family.
