A young woman pursues a career in theater and catches the eye of a Broadway booking agent after a successful performance, but a year later when he returns, she discovers he has moved on to another actress. She attempts to rekindle their romance by visiting him, but he rebuffs her advances. A parallel storyline follows Helen, who chooses to marry the steady, successful architect Frank over the brilliant but troubled designer Danny, only to find herself increasingly unhappy as Frank's career ambitions overshadow their relationship, while she regrets her decision to abandon her love for Danny's passionate but precarious life.
