The Westerner Comics #23 The issue features two main stories. The lead story, "Wanted," depicts the Westerner's pursuit and defeat of the outlaw Bat Matthews (alias Black Bat), a cutthroat gang leader who robbed and terrorized the people of Utah, culminating in Matthews's death. The second story follows a gunslinger named Kansas Johnny who is shamed in Virginia City when he backs down from a confrontation with the faster-drawing Farmer Peel; Johnny later challenges Peel to a duel at noon at Flynn's Carriage Shop, where Peel shoots and kills him. A backup story titled "Nuggets" opens with Sam Jenkins retiring for the evening, followed by Braden and his gunmen attempting to capture him on Morgan Wheeler's orders; days later, Nuggets opens his barber shop for business and encounters various customers, including the wounded Curly Braden seeking a shave.
