"The Dope and the Dream Boat," by Betty Hill, depicts Freddy Merritt's attempt to win a date with the kind-hearted Susie Wray at Ashford High School, only to have a brutish rival named the "dope" interfere with his courtship. A third story deals with a woman named Lorna torn between her love for Dave and her concern over his unwillingness to marry her while he cares for his widowed mother.
