Tim Holt pursues outlaws who have stolen his bronc, tracking them into the Rocky hills where he discovers they are working with the notorious Jenkins gang. Meanwhile, "The Ghost Rider" story features a supernatural tale involving a cursed playing card—the Ace of Death—that kills anyone it touches, with a river gambler named Farnsworth using marked cards on a riverboat until the card's curse strikes him down. In a parallel Tim Holt subplot, his sister Jicarilla enlists Helen's help, and Helen volunteers to pose as the Black Phantom to infiltrate the Jenkins gang and gather evidence against them while Tim recovers from his wounds.
