True Comics #36
True Comics #36 is an anthology issue featuring twelve stories about historical and contemporary figures. The main stories include a biography of Lieutenant General Ira C. Eaker, a flying general; an account of Garibaldi's 1859 campaign to liberate Sicily and unify Italy, where he led 1,070 volunteers against the Sicilian King's forces and ultimately achieved a triumphant march on Naples; and the story of Chips, a U.S. Army dog who became the first canine in American military history to receive the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart for heroism in action, specifically for eliminating a dangerous machine-gun nest on November 19, 1943. The issue also includes a public service announcement encouraging readers to "Fight Waste" by collecting waste paper for the war effort.
