"The Hero of Tarawa" depicts Lieutenant Alexander Bonnyman leading the tough 2nd Battalion Executive of the U.S. Marines against Japanese positions on Tarawa, a brutal three-day battle from November 20-22 that resulted in significant casualties on both sides and Bonnyman's death. A second story features an American soldier named Epperson holding off a Japanese tide during combat, using machine gun fire to repel repeated enemy attacks. The issue also includes a text story about an anti-communist guerrilla operation in a Latin American country, where fighters destroy a sugar refinery supplying the Red Country and later commandeer a fishing boat to return home.
