Wild Bill Hickok encounters Dave Tutt, a skulking killer who has shot the pistol from Tutt's hand, leaving him wounded. When General Hancock's commander arrives at the scene, Hickok demonstrates his incredible marksmanship by hitting two targets at considerable distance, impressing the officer enough to recruit him as an Army scout. Wild Bill then joins Texas cowhands in pursuing a band of outlaws through the Apache Trail and canyon country, devising a strategy to trap the criminals in their cave hideout using a rope loop suspended from the rimrock above. The story concludes with a separate tale involving frontier characters Luke Lester, Andy Dugan, and others who discover a substantial fortune ($50,000) hidden in a safe and plan to escape across the border while evading pursuit.
