Lucy, a woman working at a gas station, falls in love with Jeff Clark, a customer who stops by regularly. When Jeff proposes opening a business together in the desert, Lucy agrees despite her reservations, but Jeff abandons her after their initial success. Years later, Lucy encounters Jeff again and learns he has married another woman named Phyllis; after a chance meeting where Lucy discovers Jeff's unhappiness with his marriage, he attempts to rekindle their romance. Lucy ultimately rejects Jeff's advances, choosing instead to build a life with Mr. Linwood, a kind man who has genuinely cared for her all along.
