This hand-colored lithograph presents three figures in early-twentieth-century Petersburg dress, rendered in the tradition of European character studies and social types. The composition—a bearded workman with basket, a fashionably dressed woman in center, and a bourgeois gentleman—employs exaggeration of physiognomy and costume to mark social class and ethnic identity, common to the *Bilderbogen* picture-sheets and urban satirical prints circulating across the Russian Empire. The artist Erik Obermann captures the visual markers of a cosmopolitan capital through caricatural observation. Such type-sheets, descended from Hogarth and Daumier, fed directly into early comic illustration, offering standardized figures and comedic characterization through appearance that would shape the visual language of emerging comics media.
