Cartoons & Caricature
Political cartoons, caricatures, and satirical prints — the print satire the comic strip was born from
Before the comic strip there was the caricature. From Hogarth's moral series through Gillray and Rowlandson's savage Georgian etchings, Daumier's lithographs for the Paris press, Thomas Nast's campaigns in the American weeklies, and the German Bilderbogen picture-sheets, satirists worked out the visual language — the exaggerated figure, the sequential panel, the caption and speech — that the comic book would inherit. These prints are drawn from British and continental collections and are in the public domain by age.
