Declaration of Free Speech: The Leyden Preachers
This Dutch typographic broadside lists names of clergy and citizens in support of Franciscus Adrianus van der Kemp, a Leiden preacher whose radical sermons defending the Patriot cause made him controversial. Rather than illustration, the print deploys text itself as satire—the dense columns of names both mock and immortalize the network of dissidents. Published during the Dutch Patriot rebellion against the House of Orange, it exemplifies how Enlightenment-era political broadsheets weaponized typography and enumeration. Descended from sixteenth-century religious polemics and anticipating nineteenth-century satirical journalism, such texts preceded the pictorial caricatures of Gillray and Rowlandson, proving that satirical print culture predates drawn caricature.
