John Law and Others Bearing Their Debts on Their Shoulders
This copper engraving satirizes the collapse of John Law's Mississippi Company scheme, which devastated European investors. Figures stagger under enormous debts personified as heavy burdens, while a cherub in the foreground vomits coins—a crude symbol of financial ruin. The print exemplifies early 18th-century Dutch satirical engraving, combining dense allegorical detail with crude bodily humor to mock financial fraud and speculation. Text panels in Dutch frame the composition. Such prints—produced rapidly and distributed widely—pioneered the visual language of political and economic satire that would flourish under Hogarth and later expand into the caricature tradition. This combines moral instruction, popular spectacle, and visual wit in ways that directly anticipated modern cartooning.
