A Consequent Successor to the Monopoly in the Matter of Evictions
This Dutch wood engraving depicts a well-dressed man in profile instructing two working-class figures—rendered with caricatured features typical of 19th-century satire—in the mechanics of forced eviction. The print targets policies of mass displacement, showing the transmission of bureaucratic cruelty down the social hierarchy. The composition echoes the satirical print tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier: authority figures positioned to instruct or dominate subordinates. The crude rendering of the laborers reflects period conventions of class-based caricature. This work belongs to the lineage of political broadsheets and satirical engravings that, before cinema and comics, served as mass media for social commentary and public ridicule of policy and power.
