Dutch Political Satire on Royal Prerogative, 1866
This wood engraving satirizes a constitutional crisis in the Netherlands, depicting a crowned canopy and an allegorical female figure above anxious ministers below. The caption reads: "The Truth: 'Hush, gentlemen, that is no loyal game!'" The print exemplifies 19th-century Dutch political graphics—descended from Gillray and Daumier—that deployed classical allegory and grotesque scale to mock government overreach. The crude hierarchies and exaggerated features reflect period caricature conventions, including the physical caricaturing of male politicians. Such prints circulated as numbered broadsheets to partisan audiences, establishing visual arguments about power, legitimacy, and constitutional limits through satire rather than reasoned debate.
