Colonial Satire: Governor-General Mijer in the Dutch East Indies
· 1866

This wood engraving depicts Dutch Governor-General Mijer relaxing in a tropical gazebo while indigenous laborers appear in the background. The figure's exaggerated pose and the banner reading 'Brenzo' underscore the artist's political commentary on imperial governance in the Dutch East Indies. Part of the 19th-century print satire tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray, such Dutch political engravings deployed caricature and scene-based humor to challenge authority.
