Robert Macaire as a Book Vendor
This hand-colored lithograph depicts the con artist Robert Macaire hawking wares to a crowd of working-class Parisians. The central figure, dressed in shabby finery with exaggerated features, holds up documents while peddling from a portable stand. Surrounding figures represent his marks and accomplices. The print exemplifies the tradition of satirical caricature descended from Hogarth and Gillray, channeled through French lithography's golden age. Macaire became a stock character embodying commercial fraud and social climbing in 1830s popular culture. This tradition of comic-exaggerated types—the fool, the charlatan, the mob—directly prefigures the character-driven narratives of modern comics, where archetypal figures drive narrative and social commentary.
