Ornamental Cartouche with Inscription, from The Toast
This engraved ornamental border frames a satirical heraldic device—a hallmark of early-eighteenth-century print satire. The elaborate circular cartouche, adorned with scrollwork, stars, and flourishes, contains an illegible or cryptic inscription within a banner, typical of the period's mock-heroic tradition. Such decorative frontispieces announced the subject of political and personal ridicule to come. This visual strategy descends from the emblematic tradition and connects to the work of Hogarth and later caricaturists who used ornament and design to signal satiric intent. The engraving technique itself—precise, formal, dignified—creates ironic contrast with the scurrilous content it introduces, a tension central to print satire's power.
