Competition Among the Three Monuments That Are "Looming"
This Dutch wood engraving satirizes three planned monuments through a comedic street scene. Two well-dressed gentlemen in top hats compete to outdo each other while displaying architectural plans, while a young boy watches and a figure in shadow observes. The print exemplifies the 19th-century tradition of political caricature descended from Hogarth and Gillray—using exaggerated human figures and contemporary dress to mock public institutions and rivalries. The humor targets competing architectural ambitions, rendered through vigorous line work typical of period wood engraving. Such satirical prints, distributed as broadsheets and periodicals, formed a crucial bridge between older print satire and modern sequential comics, combining visual wit with social commentary for mass audiences.
