This Dutch wood engraving satirizes two political figures in military dress, one seated and dejected, the other standing triumphantly with a document. The print belongs to the European tradition of political caricature descended from Hogarth and Gillray, channeled through German Bilderbogen picture-sheets and French satirists. The dramatic composition and exaggerated physiognomies target Dutch political opponents of the 1860s. Below, verse in German parodies Goethe's *Faust*, mocking the figures' political ambitions and ministerial pretensions.
