Le tabouret et les cache-clous
This hand-colored pochoir illustration depicts an upholstered ottoman or footstool rendered in fashionable Art Deco style—its black curved frame contrasting with a pink-beige cushioned top, embellished with decorative rosettes and swags overhead. The print exemplifies the visual language of early twentieth-century French fashion and design journalism, where satirical observation mingles with aesthetic instruction. The work descends from a longer tradition of European print satire extending back through Daumier and Gillray, in which domestic furnishings and material culture serve as vehicles for social commentary. Here, functional modernity meets ornamental excess—the piece simultaneously celebrates and gently mocks the period's appetite for stylish domestic objects, using clean line and vivid color to render both aspiration and absurdity legible to a metropolitan audience.
