De Ridder van het Gilde Kalf (The Knight of the Guild Calf)
· 1720

This Dutch engraving satirizes a civic procession featuring a mounted figure in armor riding a wooden calf, accompanied by guild members in absurd costume. The scene mocks the pretensions and follies of trade guilds and their ceremonial displays through grotesque exaggeration and visual nonsense—a figure on stilts, oversized shields, ridiculous pageantry. The accompanying verse narrative intensifies the ridicule of social vanity and commercial pomposity. Rooted in Northern Renaissance traditions of political and social satire, this print exemplifies the engraved broadsheet culture that preceded modern comics: sequential narrative, caricature, text-image integration, and moral mockery aimed at urban audiences. Such prints circulated widely as popular entertainment and social commentary.
