The Battle of Cascina

Michelangelo Buonarroti · 1808

The Battle of Cascina
Engraved by Luigi Schiavonetti after Michelangelo's unfinished cartoon, this copper engraving preserves the Renaissance master's violent composition of Florentine soldiers surprised by enemy forces. The writhing male nudes—rendered with anatomical precision across multiple planes—transform war into sculptural spectacle. Schiavonetti's fine lines and tonal gradations demonstrate the reproductive engraver's craft at its height. This work bridges Renaissance art history and the satirical print tradition: while not itself satire, it shows how engraving circulated and democratized images for public audiences, the same technology that enabled Gillray and Rowlandson to distribute biting political commentary. Michelangelo's lost original influenced artistic culture; Schiavonetti's version ensured its reach extended far beyond the studio.
