Departure of Seminary Students from St. Acheul
· 1825

This etching depicts a confrontational street scene outside a Catholic seminary, with clergy and students departing amid apparent public hostility. Figures in religious dress face a crowd; a carriage laden with baggage prepares to leave. The print belongs to the Northern European tradition of satirical religious and political commentary that produced works by Hogarth and Gillray before it. Here, the artist uses the etcher's sharp line to sketch character types and spatial chaos—techniques foundational to later comic narrative. The print reflects post-Napoleonic anxieties about clerical authority and institutional power in Dutch and Belgian society. Such satirical prints, distributed as single sheets, established visual conventions of exaggerated feature and theatrical gesture that comic strips would later systematize into sequential form.
