A Student's Dream: Satirical Print from a Leiden Almanac
· 1854

This etched or engraved print wraps multiple comic scenes around a central vision of student life—a young scholar dozing by his stove while fantastical episodes unfold in the margins. The composition recalls German Bilderbogen and the tradition of Rowlandson and Gillray: moral chaos presented as interconnected vignettes, each exaggerating folly through caricature and grotesque distortion. Nautical mishaps, domestic disasters, and academic misadventure swirl around the dreamer, critiquing student excess and negligence. Such prints, embedded in almanacs for educated readers, inherited the 18th-century print satire's method of serial narrative mockery—precursor to modern comic sequencing—while reflecting the era's class anxieties about youth and respectability.
