Board of Excise for Granting Beer Licences
This wood engraving depicts a crowned figure holding a placard announcing the "Board of Excise for Granting Beer Licences"—a satire on government regulation of alcohol sales. The image combines text and illustration in the tradition of political caricature stretching from Hogarth through Gillray and Rowlandson. The crowned head and formal presentation mock bureaucratic authority and the commercial interests behind licensing policy. Part of a verse satire on gin and beer sales, this print exemplifies how 19th-century satirists used exaggeration, symbolic imagery, and crude caricature to critique social policy. The wood-engraving technique allowed mass distribution of such broadsides, establishing visual satire as a popular medium that would evolve into the comic strip and comic book.
