Student Satire from Utrecht Almanac
· 1833

This wood engraving from a Dutch student almanac presents nine vignettes of university life and social types. The central band depicts a procession or gathering of figures, likely representing student activities or campus characters. Surrounding scenes show commerce, military drill, religious ceremony, and social hierarchies rendered through exaggerated poses and expressions. The print exemplifies the European tradition of satirical picture-sheets—descended from Hogarth and developed by Gillray and Daumier—which used sequential imagery to mock institutions and social behavior. Such almanac prints reached popular audiences through cheap reproduction, establishing a visual language that would later structure comic strips. The rendering combines keen observation of costume and deportment with caricature.
