The Fall of the Palatine: A Broadsheet Satire
This etched broadsheet depicts the political and military collapse of Frederick V of the Palatinate, whose brief reign as King of Bohemia ended in defeat at the Battle of White Mountain (1620). The upper register shows a procession of clergy and nobility; below, labeled figures in contemporary dress gather around a wounded eagle—Frederick's heraldic symbol—while a fool and soldiers mock the fallen prince. The composition employs the visual language of Northern European protest prints: engraved allegorical imagery, labeled characters, and sequential narrative panels that convey political commentary to a literate public. Such satirical broadsides anticipated later caricature traditions, establishing conventions of grotesque exaggeration, symbolic annotation, and moral judgment that would evolve through Hogarth and Gillray into modern comic art.
